Yes, that is right. The pictures have not been updated for a long time.

At least 4.3 should really ship with updated pictures as this would increase usability a lot especially for new users.

Which screenshots do you mean? Docs? Which file?

There are a lot of pictures to illustrate what is meant. These pictures are still from version 3.8 (or even older).

They should already have been actualised with the cleaner backend project for 4.2, but obviously noone did that.

The pictures come from the folders typo3/sysext/<name_of_sysext>/cshimages.
So there are more than 200 pictures to be made...

I think that is too much for me to do alone. But with some help, I could make a part of the pictures.

Please see the picture I attached as a test. It is the first picture in Web > Page.
The results are the following:
- The size of the pictures in pixels may change. That is needed due to changes in the layout. The new size is automatically recognized and written correctly in the html-output.
- The filesize will go up some KB. The old pictures still come from times, when noone had broadband-internet-access. I think in favour of a better image-quality some KB more are acceptable today, right?
- Using version 4.3 seems preferable, since the pictures should be included there und there might have been changes in the user interface compared to 4.2 (new tab-sizes, other modules and so on).
- Using English language for the BE and an english page tree (exactly as in the old pictures currently included).

If you have notes on what I should especially take care of or (with a look at the example-picture) change, please write it down here in the next week.
Afterwards I would like to begin working on this!

Uninstall extension t3skin and you will notice that those pictures in Help > Manual are still valid - at least partly!

As long as TYPO3 does not depend on t3skin, new pictures should be made with a deactivated t3skin extension.

I don't think that we should deactivate t3skin for making the screenshots.
The screenshots should help new users to understand how TYPO3 works.
So the main-target-group are not users of old versions (who don't have t3skin), but new users.
And new users nowadays will mostly also use a new (newly set up) version of TYPO3, where t3skin is activated by default.

Starting with 4.4.0, the old skin will not be usable any more.

So the screenshots should be updated to the current skin. If possible this should be done for each major version.

I currently started redoing most of them, and I hope I get done before 4.4.0 is out.

As discussed on the documentation list, I will use the introduction package as a base for the pagetree.

In the long run, CSH and the images should be updated along with changes, so TYPO3 keeps the very good inline help up to date.

I guess the design team will take care of most open problems ...
Apart from that, I guess followup's will be enough ... I will have a closer look on Monday when all skin changes are hopefully committed.

IMHO we could improve CSH in bugfix versions too ... it won't hurt anyone
