Description

Currently it is possible to use the new system-categories for pages and tt_content only, but not for sys_file-records (or sys_filereference) for example. It would be nice if the core would make better use of the categories in general.

This is solved in 6.2 and can be closed. Default categorizable pages are tt_content, pages and sys_file_metadata. Each table can be enabled for using the Category API.
