IMHO http://fontawesome.io/icons/ should be taken into serious consideration as it is commonly used, has plenty of icons and is quite compatible licensed http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/license/
one drawback:
filetype support needs more filetype icons. Perhaps it worth contributing filetypes to it and then integrate it.

Issue is not only that the icons are outdated. You are not able to easily add/extend the existing list of file extension icons.

One more reason to take fontawesome into consideration.
I think it would be neat to have them in resources of an extension. That way it is possible to manipulate and extend the icons without harming anything.
