Description
We need to set this up at the beginning. Exactly which browsers (and which version), and under which OS we will support.
This to set up proper Test Environments.
As an initial list I propose:
(Desktop)- IE6+
- Firefox 3+
- Safari 3+
- Chrome 5+ (should we support an older version? 5 is the first version which also runs on *nix)
- Opera 9+ (again, in doubt if we should test older versions)
Note:
Not sure about which version we should support. Please provide insight if you have more data about popularity of each version.
Since we have just 1 overlap in Rendering Engines (between Safari and Chrome) but there still are some vague differences, we should test both.
For Gecko based browsers, Firefox should probably suffice.
And Opera is alone in its corner.

Mobile world
I can access and use the T3 BE quite handy from my iPhone.
We should probably aim to support, but this would probably need a study (@ppk is making one for Vodaphone for some time now, and it seems that the situation is usually grim. A lot of differences in the JS ballpark):
- iPhone
- Android
- Windows Mobile (have never used a Windows Mobile phone, so don't have much data about them)
- Blackberry
Opera Mobile which runs on most phones.

Benni Mack already made a suggestion regarding browser versions: IE 6-8, Firefox 3.5/3.6, Safari 4 / Google Chrome (latest), Opera
What we need to talk about as well is the set of different browser/OS combinations we are going to support.
i.e.: Do we really need Safari/WIN just because it's there, or should we assume that Safari belongs to the Apple universe?

Safari for WIN is in most aspect very similar to Safari on Mac.
I'd say there isn't the need to test thoroughly on both versions, but it may be good to test it when reaching major milestones.

Why not remove support for IE6?
Even microsoft recommends an update.
This browser lacks in so many things, it would be great to get rid of it.

It would actually be awesome to officially NOT support IE6.
But I'm pretty sure T3 as a large enterprise solution would still do good to support it.
(Whereas me, as a developer, would love to just jump over the small hacks still needed for it)

Exactly this is the reason, why we currently have no choice but keeping it. There are still lots of those enterprises outthere, that are working on pre WinXP systems. BUT - the official support for Windows 2000 will end at July, 13th 2010, which is why I thought that we could officially drop IE6 support in TYPO3 4.5 but not 4.4.
But this depends on how many people are still using IE6 on XP as well without ever updating to IE7 or IE8. According to W3schools browser statistics, the current market share of IE6 is still higher than that of Safari and Opera together (! - both of them supported by TYPO3). This is not taking into account all the umpteen thousands of Windows based systems that are running in intranets only, which is one of the major playgrounds for TYPO3. But the market share of W2K systems is just 0.5%, so I guess most of the IE6 users will come from XP based systems. This again means, we will have to wait until Windows XP support officially ends, which will be April, 8th 2014!
But anyway, since this team is planned to work on technical stuff only and not make any strategical decisions, we can only suggest this to the release managers and of course we will have to cope with it as long as IE6 is officially supported.

Sorry, but it's somehow an abdication of responsibility. An enterprise solution should never support insecure software. There are so many products going to phase out support. TYPO3 should follow. It's definitely worth it and should be suggested.

But it's not the job of this team to decide it, and currently the decision is: We are going to support it!
