Upgrade > Check for broken extensions blocks rendering

Description
Opening "Upgrade > Check for broken extensions" in the maintenance area blocks the browser rendering because of non-async AJAX (sic!) requests.
Using async: false is highly discouraged and must be solved in a different way.
