Description

Hi folks.

First of all I want to say thank you for the efforts you already put into the improvements for the last TYPO3 version. It's been a bit quiet around here after the release of 4.4 though and there have been lots of different things happening that make it necessary to change some policies for our team.

The new Long Term Support version 4.5 is on the way, a first alpha is already released and the next one is to come out within the next 2 weeks. Ernesto, who is one of the release managers of this new version, asked me to reactivate this team, so that we can still make sure that the TYPO3 BE will be running even with IE6, because the LTS will be the last official TYPO3 version to support this browser.

But there are some other tasks, that will fit the goals of this team as well, since the TYPO3 BE needs more than just a code cleanup. There are many areas that will need a cleanup regarding the naming/labelling and the look and feel of backend forms. Something we already started at T3UXW09 by refactoring the TCA setup of the pages table. You will find an extTables.php file attached that you can move to your /typo3conf folder to see the results. We want to have something similar at least for the tt_content table of 4.5, maybe even more tables are possible.

Since this is more a textual or design task I thought it would be a good idea to hand it over to this team, since it gives even "non coders" the opportunity to get something done for the core.

Now the goal is to reactivate the teamwork on these tasks and to have a meeting next week to get a working schedule. I really would appreciate your feedback. And please even give a feedback, when you won't be able to do something until the release of 4.5.

Have a nice weekend

Joey

And here's a link to the official TCA cleanup project:

Joh, thanks for "warming that up"!

It would be very good to have some usability experts around, but I think we need simple "power users" of TYPO3, which know what each field in tt_content and pages does to be able to decide what to move around where.

Here is the relevant wiki entry from the T3UXW09:

http://forge.typo3.org/projects/hci/wiki/Rearranged_page_editing_form

You might consider moving that information to the new TCA cleanup form for more exposure (it's difficult to find that information on the hci project).

but I think we need simple "power users" of TYPO3, which know what each field in tt_content and pages does to be able to decide what to move around where.

Good point, but on the other hand we need beginners as well at least for testing, to make sure the stuff that is well known to the power users will still be understandable for new TYPO3 users. At least the T3UXW results showed that there were even experienced users that had completely wrong assumptions about the meaning of certain labels and the usage of the functions behind them.

So the tricky thing is to find a kind of language that will communicate the clear, common and uniqe meaning of each item, together with a layout that offers a maximum of usability for most of the TYPO3 users regardless of their skill level. - In most of the cases "intelligently dumbing down" an interface will help the experienced users as well. - Or as the Smart slogan said: Reduce to the max!

I will move the wiki stuff to the official project.

Thanks for the round-up. I'm ready to start again. When we have our first meeting? Please let me know.

I just added you as a member to the TCA Cleanup project.
Unfortunately the rest of the team seems to be not available?

Let's have a meeting next week - I will make an announcement in the english NG as well to get more people involved.
