If this is an important extension by popularity, what other means have you tried to get money for development? F.i. crowdfunding, sponsorships, paid support etc.

I am getting sometimes donations or things from my amazon wishlist but this is less than 100€. People are getting in contact me for additional extensions which are built on top of news but this is no sponsorship as it is payment for regular work I do as a freelancer. So for the direct development of EXT:news I don't really get money. Same is for paid support. Those payments are for the work I do for the client, it does not sponsor the news extension.

Suggestion: Try to get a location which is sponsored and pay a bit more for the hotel rooms instead. Depends on the location, but 80 EUR is usually too low for it...

a bit more a general suggestion: wouldn't it be good to have a general budget for the most important extensions (e.g. selected by most downloads or most positive ratings, and a maximum number so that the sponsoring shall not be too low, so maybe 3 or 5 extensions)? Despite that, news is of course one of the most important extensions, that's no question.

IMHO the planned "TYPO3 marketplace" presented by TYPO3 Inc is aiming for exactly that, since it will focus on the more relevant parts of the TYPO3 eco system and give them a platform to raise such a budget.
We discussed the so called "A class extensions" for quite a while now, but I think giving them an accumulated budget will not solve the maintenance problem, since it will just create a competitive situation between developers, where there is none with a dedicated budget for just one extension.
