in a talk about CMS features someone mentioned 'other CMS' which handle links in a separate table, so that changing links could be changed at a centralized point.
regarding the chaos in the current way TYPO generates links this might be a nice idea about an alternative:
similar to FAL have a central sys_link table with some variants for different kind of links where you gather all link relevant information (url/pageid/email/anchor/file, target, title, alt, class, protocol, ...) with individualized override.
in the end all links are no longer a string with multiple information concatenated but an uid
