On the road to devlog 3.0
The development of the next major version of devlog has officially started.
I had been meaning to work on a major update to devlog in a long while, but finally Fabien started the action. So what to expect? The new version of devlog (3.0) will be compatible only with TYPO3 4.3 and above. This choice makes it possible to use all the new stuff introduced there, while knowing that branch 2.x still provides a very good tool, compatible with older versions of TYPO3.
The work will be focused on two main areas:
- The BE module: will be revamped to use all the latest stuff from TYPO3 4.3 (and even from before, since the devlog's BE module is pretty outdated). Dispatcher, docheader, ExtJS, flash messages are all planned. The "Clear log" screen will disappear, to be replaced by a more easily accessible drop-down menu in the docheader. Fabien has already started working on this.
- The logger itself: a common request was that the devlog should be able to write to other targets than the DB. While it is already possible to use other extensions that do this, many people expressed that they liked all the configuration options of the devlog and would like to be able to use them while writing to other targets. To meet this request, the logging will be refactored to enable the use of various "logger" classes, each able to log to different targets, while still benefiting from the general devlog configuration.
If you have got other wishes, now is the perfect time to express them. Of course, providing a patch will raise your chances of being listened to ;-)
