If I create a translation and then use the page module to copy the default content element(s), it resets the start and stop dates.

I tried this and what happens is that the start / stop is not displayed in the new language. But if you look at the detail view of the new content element the start / stop time from the original record is displayed. It is not editable because it's loaded from the original record.
