I found the problem. It is because IE doesn't allow underscores in domain names.
So it is not a typo3 issue.

Yes they are. I can login into 4.1.6.
The Log message in the backend is "password not accepted". Bertalan Fodor

On a fresh install of typo3 I can't login to backend from Internet Explorer 7. On FireFox I have no preblem.
