Description
I'm using Mac Book pro, typo3 4.4.4 and in both safari 5.0.3 and Firefox 3.6.13, RTE would not load. Occasionally the icon to enlarge would appear and I could access the full page version of the RTE. I tended to choose to disable the RTE on most pages when editing. After searching today for solutions, I tried reinstalling the extension and as per another thread, I disabled other ext that possibly interfere. Now I get "Fatal error: Call to protected method language::readLLfile() from context 'tx_rtehtmlarea_base' in typo3conf/ext/rtehtmlarea/class.tx_rtehtmlarea_base.php on line 1507"
So, I have uninstalled rtehtmlarea again so that I can still edit.
I'm a relative newbie to typo3 but usually can work these things out.None of the threads I have looked at have offered me solutions that work in my situation. Would be glad of suggestions/guidance

You have a local installation of rtehtmlarea: typo3conf/ext/rtehtmlarea/
Remove this one and use the sysext rtehtmlarea (it's in typo3/sysext/rtehtmlarea/).
Using rte versions from other TYPO3 versions is not supported.

Thanks Steffen. I understand! This extension was there from the previous T3 3.8 installation we upgraded from. I deleted the directory at typo3conf/ext/rtehtmlarea/.
And activated the system version and now the RTE appears without problems. Thank you for the clarification. I should have noted better the "local" tag in the ext manager when I was first trying to figure this out.
