Side note: There is an extension "cc_sv_auth" that provides the basic service framwork for TYPO3 3.7 (services were introduced in TYPO3 3.8).

Additionally that extension contains a module that displays the existing authentication services. Have a look at that! (Plus, there is a manual which should be integrated into CoreDocs since long...)

@Michael - there is already a document (unfortunally not displayed by ter_doc)
