Description

When you define section fields with a default value, it's not displayed on create new element. The default value is in the corresponding hidden field only, so you have to save first, and then they appear.
That is not the intendent way ;-)

The issue is very old, does this issue exists in newer versions of TYPO3 CMS (4.5 or 6.1)?
