The hook
$TYPO3_CONF_VARS['SC_OPTIONS']['tslib/hooks/class.tx_cms_mediaitems.php']['customMediaRender']
should be triggered always to be able to manipulate all the renderTypes and not only with the custom renderTypes, so you could do nice things like changing flashvars, replace the file URL for other one (for example the same file located in a CDN ....)
