IMHO the error message itself should be moved to the alt/title tag of the icon, so that the box could be shrinked to the size of the exclamation mark + some padding.
What do you think?

At least I had no real idea how to solve it, without destroying the compact view of all images. But that's the way it's done inside the list view of page elements. All compact preview images are arranged in a row and the error message is displayed as a block-level element in a new row.
When moving the error message to the title tag, I would also think about adding a tooltip. Because a tooltip could appear faster than hovering the item and people that are nout familiar with the default tooltips will probably never see the exact error message. Beside the fact, that the normal browser tooltip will disappear after some time. And error messages could be pretty long.
If you don't like the javascript tooltip idea it would be good to add a css cursor-property when hovering the error, so people get a hint that there might happen something when they hover a little longer.

Hi,
as this issue is very old. Does the problem still exists within newer versions of TYPO3 CMS (6.1.7)?
