Use case example:

Content element "Images" or "Text & Images"

You could modifiy the file via ImageMagick
(e.g. put a magnifier icon in the bottom right corner)
if the field "Enlarge on Click" is checked.

In my opinion, this is better than a CSS positioned icon.
You have no browser problems, as it is one single image,
reduce the source code and requests to the server.
