The documentation mentions different possibilities for setting up error and message objects (using TypoScript). Please check:

Some of the documented possibilities are not working.
Without defining a cObject the following is not working:
error.value = The value does not appear to be a hostname message.value = Use the right pattern
IMHO it's not a bug. We have several possibilities:
- change documentation
- change code, i.e. make it work :)
