[] operator not supported for strings

Error thrown in file: typo3/sysext/frontend/Classes/ContentObject/Menu/AbstractMenuContentObject.php in line 355.

This also happens after a download from server and local install under Typo3 7.6. It does not seem to be fixed at all.
Not in the mood to trace it down (so many, many, many errors to trace down with typo3 i am really fed up with this). Quick fix for me was to not use PHP7 but use PHP5.6.
