m.mask produces 256 color images (why is GDlib involved here???)

Description
I am trying to use the m.mask functionality and found out that this somehow does create 256 color images just as if I would use GIFBUILDER, which is known to produce 256 images (unfortunately). I can not understand why this happens, did not read this part of the code yet. But it looks like GDlib comes into action here, while this is actually completely unnecessary here!
Looks like another performance killer!
This should be cleaned up in t3 4.0.0! As should the whole image creation library! It is full of bugs and unnecessary code!

The 'kb_allcolors' extension found here:

Hi, the kb_allcolors is integrated into the core, right? So this problem should not exist any longer - but we saw it with 4.0.2 today... Any insight?

Still exists with 4.0.4... any hints on how to solve this?

as this issue is very old. Does the problem still exists within newer versions of TYPO3 CMS (4.5 or 6.1)?
