Bug #17967

sub and sup may be enabled at the same time
Added by Andreas Wolf almost 17 years ago.
Updated over 16 years ago.
Description
Though they are contradictionary, one may enable subscript and superscript at the same time. They should be mutually exclusive, so when you click the superscript button, subscript should be disabled automatically and the other way round.
(issue imported from #M7088)
Where do you get such rule from?
Pure logic ;)
No, seriously: There is no sense in raising and lowering the base-line of the text at the same time. Just have a look at office software like OpenOffice Writer - when you click superscript there and have subscript activated, the latter is deactivated automatically.
Hi Andreas,
obviously pure logic fails here, because mathematicians can think of plenty of cases where they want sub inside sup and vice versa. Furthermore, nesting those elements validates perfectly. So if you make them mutually exclusive, mathematicians will not be able to do what they need to do.
My five cents, Uschi
If you try in the RTE with Firefox, you will see that you may very well enter, for example, "a" exponent "i" indices "2" (removing the quotes and using sup for exponentiation and sub for indices). I think this is totally valid, meaningful and useful.
