I ve added a new hook in the function cImage in the file typo3/sysext/cms/tslib/class.tslib_content.php
I think that this Hook could be useful to use your own CDN or similar things
For example I just developed a new extension to distribute image src between multiple servers to improve the performance of TYPO3 pages with lots of images. I ll publish this extension if this hook is in the core, in other way it have no sense

My extension honors this doc http://www.websiteoptimization.com/speed/tweak/parallel/ and i think that is useful for people. But to be able to use it in a non intrusive way i need this hook.
Also this hook could be useful to link stored images replicated in Amazon S3
