Thumbnails (Backend) are not displayed

Description
After updating TYPO3 CMS 4.5.25 to 4.5.27, the generating of thumbnails in the backend stopped working. The error is reproducible on 3 different servers (CentOS 6.4, PHP 5.3.3).
As suggested by Francois Suter I opened this as new issue to give it the proper visibility, but please see the description of Bug #31953

The error you described might occur, if some error message (text) shall be outputted, where an image is expected.
