tt_content preview in page module not working when using <f:format.crop> in it

Description
I tried to add a backend preview for my own CType like described here:
Problem is, that when I add a <f:format.crop>, my template seems to be completely ignored and only the default template gets displayed. If I remove the <f:format.crop> from my template everything else in my custom backend preview gets shown.

I can not reproduce that. I tested it with this template
<f:format.crop maxCharacters="10" respectWordBoundaries="0">this is a simple test of cropping</f:format.crop>
and output is: "this is a..." which is the result I expected.
please retest with latest master and if still occours, add some more info about your system and your template
