It's possible to get stuck with auto-versioning and no restrictions on version types. The editor may end up with the problem that TYPO3 cannot create any new version:

Message: 'Versions found on page, no "Page" versioning possible'

So he has to publish it before he can change the contents again.

A solution and nice feature for other situations is the "merge versions" feature. The idea is that the new page version subsumes and obsoletes the element versions on this page. That is all element versions are merged into one page version.
