Soft hyphens: Editing impossible
Added by Christian Hennecke almost 14 years ago.
Updated about 10 years ago.
Description
Currently, soft hyphens cannot be inserted in Firefox (3.6.13 tested). No character or entity is visible in the RTE and nothing is rendered in the frontend.
Inserting a soft hyphen in Opera (11.01 tested) is not reflected in the RTE either, but produces the expected result in the FE. Finding and editing such characters in the RTE seems to be impossible.
Soft hyphens are a great feature for the RTE but unfortunately it's unusable for editors at the moment. Some kind of visual feedback is needed. LibreOffice and MS Word do this via displaying a hyphen with a gray background color. The code view could simply display the "shy" entity.

You can insert a soft hyphen using the character map. The soft hyphen does work in Firefox 3 both within the RTE and in the frontend. Of course, it is not visible unless at the end of a line.
I don't know how to add a background to this entity in the RTE without adding some markup in the content. I feel this would be very intrusive...
I did try inserting it using the character map. As I wrote, it worked in Opera, but not in Firefox 3.6.13 running on Ubuntu 10.10.
As for how to make it visible: Personally, I'd rather live with some surplus markup than not be able to edit the stuff. Could you insert span tags around the entity dynamically with JavaScript?

Hi,
as this issue is very old. Does the problem still exists within newer versions of TYPO3 CMS (6.2.3)?
