So it should be at least 5.1 - or are there any hard requirements for MySQL 5.5?

What's the point of raising the version requirement to 5.5? It is not still not widely available. What about RedHat that is commonly even more late (at least with PHP packages).

If new features are needed, we should make sure DBAL will not break...

5.1 is still supported. Dropping 5.0 is imho ok since it is not in any recent distribution anymore, even debian squeeze (which will soon be oldstable) ships with 5.1. 5.5 is default on most younger distributions already.
