I found out that there was in fact a reason to add role="img" to SVGs, despite that this is generally considered bad practice. It's a "feature" of Safari that has been changed with the current/next release: if an IMG has a SVG as its source the alt text is not spoken unless the role attribute is present.

Too bad the reason was never mentioned in the code.
