when building the NewRecordsView, the groupName for a record does get chosen by exploding the TCA table name by "_" and taking the subpart 1. In our case we had an table which resolved to "content", which made the extension tables mix up with some core tables, but renaming the group to the group label to the one given by the extension, which leads to confusion.

While there is the option to use the ['ctrl']['groupName'] to group items by other elements, it is limited to do only exactly this, because the split part will overwrite this setting. The only usable way currently to resolve or avoid such an setup would be to avoid using any name that might already be taken, either by core or even by another extension.

In our instance we solved the Issue with a small patch, which allowed the groupName field to be used to create a new group by giving it another name. I will attach the patch.
