for now, all links are processed in one chunk.
have a more distributed approach e.g. using a
queue like the crawler extension to check few links within one chunk.

Actually I would opt for a complete rewrite than (Extbase?). Some code might be shared, but this feature would change much of the logic.

We now have the option "countInARun" in the scheduler task. I checked and it does exactly what you requested. as it is configurable on a per scheduler task, I think that's really cool as is! Will close this now!
