Just added this here because Gerrit removed all newlines from my comment:
current (unpatched) status:

maxitems > 1, size > 1 -- works
maxitems = 1, size > 1 -- doesn't work, but doesn't make sense either
maxitems = 1, size = 1 -- works
maxitems > 1, size = 1 -- works equal to maxitems=1, size=1

but ... if the "autoSizeMax" setting is used, the "size = 1" cases break, because the select drop down turns into the "size > 1" multi field...

I'd suggest to fix this differently (see patchset 5) - I'd prefer to avoid the useless maxitems=1, size>1 situations here - this would implicitly also fix the suggest wizard problems. Seems much cleaner.
If I didn't catch every crash case, please add further details on how to reproduce them within the Introduction Package. Thx
