With current 7.5 the RichTextElement does not add the validation rules and therefore no FormEngineValidation like required is done.

However, it is a bit more complex as the Editor currently doesn't update the input textarea on the fly but only on save, so FormEngineValidation would the validate the rte field directly or the editor also needs to update the input field

yes. pretty nasty js thing, frank didn't had a simple solution for this when validation was rewritten. maybe we could have another look now. iirc, there is a prepared but commented example in styleguide for this case already in the required test record.
