I integrated this for DAM 1.3 (were we are using media:[uid]). I registered a media provider for that case and it works very well.

I'll submit a patch for that other bug for 4.7, but the equivalent patch for 6.0 will be totally different due to the use of FAL. Since it's totally broken anyway, you might want to fix both at once.

I don't think this is in the core, at least not in 6.0.4.
It should be added asap though because it's been a long time since this patch was submitted and it's a must-have.
Actually there are several important patches that I have to keep adding after each update to newer typo3 versions
