The pending gerrit patch was abandoned after nearly two years without action.
Status of this issue is now reset to "new" in the hope that someone picks it up again with the aim to get it done in the future.

For others stumbling across this issue: currently the best solution to be able to search for files is imho to install EXT:media. You can then also decide which element-browser for files you want to use (the original or the one from media).
